Unhappy

I have a problem, everytime my car is in park, or I put my foot on the break, when it's in drive or reverse(say at a stop light or stop sign) my car starts shaking, and then it dies. The battery light flashes on and off and my check engine light is on(my b/f's dad checked it out and couldn't find anything) so do you have any ideas? I have an '81 305 V8. I think it hates me, please help..tell me what I can do or check out and see what's wrong with it. Thanks.

Just wanted to say welcome to the site. My want to check you alternator and see if its charging like it should be. And check the battery also. Most the time when you have problems with the alternator the battery is not far behind. Hope this helps.

I did indeed tweek the idle screw and it helped for a while then it started doing it again. It's really annoying.

Does it shudder when you accelerate? Have you checked the coil?

It might need to have the mixture control solenoid adjusted or replaced.

The carb is computer controlled, and had several adjustments.

My first checks would be the Mixture Control solenoid "dwell", and idle mixture screws. Some test equipment and special tools are used.

Those carbs can be a pain, and are expensive to replace. If emissions laws or originality are not concerns, you could consider going with an older style carb and distributor, and "deep-six" the computer. 81 was really the first attempts the factory made with computer controls, and they leave a lot to be desired.

I agree with the brake power booster.I had a problem with a mustang that would die when I stepped on the brake.

had same problem with my camaro (3rd gen like yours)

the check engine light comes on because the engine isnt running anymore while your key is in the ON position, so that works like it should.

OR the idle mixture screws are not set good OR the vacuum on your vacuum-advance is not working like it should.

maybe it can also be a worn fuel pump and turning the idle higher will solve it (because the fule pump needs some revving to pump up the gas)

Ill bet my cars its 1 of these problems.

Eh...I've pretty much given up on getting other people to fix my problems...i've noticed that the only way anything gets done, is if you do it yourself...that's why I'm asking what it could be so I can fix it...I have the manul and have been reading it...Just the idea of trying to fix it then screwing it up even more..worries me. I'll try what you guys suggested, thank you I'm moving in 13 days and need to get in it good shape so maybe it'll sell...people tell me 1500 is too low..whatcha think? Thanks. Cool

Timing chain may have slipped a tooth if engine has alot of miles on it. Check local newspaper for pricing of others in the same area and price yours a hundred or so less and stick to your guns on the price if you have to sell. Hopefully, you don't have to travel far..........
