My brother was drawn to the dark side and bought a Mopar about 2 years ago. It's a 73 Charger and we just put a new 400 in it but we are having problems keeping the car running. It will start fine, run fine, idle great, and after 20 minutes it will sputter and it die.

After it dies you can see fuel when you pump the carb, but it does not want to start--I suspect vapor lock. The intake manifold and carb are very warm.

He is not having much luck on the Slopar Bulletin Board so I told him I would throw this one to the "experts".

BTW, the car has a mechanical fuel pump and Holley 750 Vac Secondary Carb . Compression is about 9 to 1 and it is a mild street motor...325 HP.

Could be vapor lock. I would also look at the gas tank cap and/or vent. If it's supposed to be vented and isn't it will quit running once there's enough of a vacuum in the tank.

The other area is the ignition. If it's anything other than points it could be failing once it gets warm enough. Next time it happens verify if it has spark as that will narrow it down a bunch.

We put an MSD box and electronic ignition on it right after he bought it.

I'll ask him about the gas tank.

Thanks and keep 'em coming-I bet him we would fix his problem before the Slopar board would!

Is any of the old factory ignition left?
Like the old module?
Chrysler igniton pickups and module are not the best.
