My car would not start. The security light would always turn on. Then I would have to wait for three minutes. Sometimes three or four times. So I got a new key, then one day it started to work again, but now the security light will only flash. And after about three trys it will start. I want to know what could be the problem, and any help would really help.

thanks, The Marshall

My guess is the ignition lock cylinder is going bad.

It could be that your starter is worn out. When the starter brushes wear down, the attaching screws will hit the armiture and short it out. This creates a huge current draw on the battery, causing the courtesy light to go out. This would only be seen when cranking.

If the light is out when not cranking, check the battery terminals. Especially the positive one. The origonal spring type will loose their tension with age and begin arcing under load. The arcing builds up carbon which insulates the terminal preventing a good connection. It can also prevent good charging.

I had that same thing happen to me! You need to get your lock cylinder replaced! You will get a new key and your light will stop coming on. Mine did that when I got mine two years ago..then it quit...but a few months ago it started up again and it just would not start. So, you need to have that checked out...I would say it is your lock cylinder...it has to do with that sensor that reads your computer chip in your key.

Well, I would love to have a Z28, but for me only being 21 years old, my insurance is entirely way too high as it is. I do good for my payments and insurance. I will one day get a Z, but for now my V6 will do. HA! You are right! I have had my fair share of problems with this car! I am the 3rd owner on it, I think they might have not been so good to the poor car...but it is my baby. Even though it breaks on me.

Jennifer's right.....get the ignition swtich lock cylinder replaced. Sounds like the PASSkey II system in it is shot (the thing that reads the little black chip in the key. If the PASSkey II system doesn't detect the "right" chip in the key, it disables the ignition, fuel, and starter system in the car for a few minutes. Had the same problem in my parent's 94 Bonneville SSE. I think GM didn't know what they were doing when designing the wiring for these '94 cars

Re: security light

Not sure what VATS you have, but if it's the one with the resistor wire, then you can do a simple bypass trick on the resistor. It's easy to do and costs almost no money, just a resistor or two from Radio Shack. I had similar problem on my '98 Chevy Silverado, where security light would come on intermittently. Sometimes truck wouldn't start, wait a few minutes and it would start and run fine for a week or two. I did the reisitor wire bypass trick about six months ago and have never had a problem since. Light stays off now.

http://www.e-z.net/~iei/vatts.htm

There's a page which explains it. Disregard the remote starter references. Just go to bottom of page and do "Method A", which is a permanent bypass.

Should take no more than an hour and cost less than five dollars...........

Good luck
