The speedometer on my 69 doesn't react quickly when temps are below fifty degrees. It has a new cable on the M21. In warmer temps it is fine. Could this be the gear in the trans slipping the cable?

The lube inside the speedo cable housing is thickening when the temp drops. Remove your cable assembley and flush it out with brake clean and relube the the speedo cable core with graphite and your problem will be cured.

The plastic driven gear and gear holder can wear too with eventual failure to drive the cable. I don't know if it would make the spedo lazy, it might.
