my 1996 3.8 will not start it wont turn over at all its got full power. i dont think its the starter. when i put the key in to start it the check gages lights turns on and the service engine soon light is on and the security light is flashing. it was runing fine all day then out of no where it just would not start.

Get a book on your car's engine and look up the troubleshooting procedures for the crankshaft position sensor (if it has one) and the camshaft position sensor (ignition module prehaps). Chances are one of these sensors could be bad.

When you turn the key on, the electric fuel pump should run for about a second and stop. Then, when the computer sees it's position sensor(s) pusling during cranking, it will turn the fuel pump and ignition circuits. If the sensor signals are missing, you'll the ECM will not turn on fuel pump, injector pulses or spark.

Along with dnult's suggestion, you might try to attempt to start again.

If it doesn't crank, wait min 3 minutes and try again with same key. If you hear the fuel pump pumping when in IGN position, then turn to START and if it is a security problem, it should start and run.

If it goes to run, then you can assume it is the key cylinder (tumbler) at fault.

There is a set of thin 'leaves' reading the key resistor and if it matches, security is happy abd will let the starter relay kick in and crank the engine. Replacement of the key tumblers is eminent. The key reading socket is within the cylinder. Cost for a replacement tumbler with new key from dealer, not necessarily Chev, will be about $80 USD. Think of the number of times the key has been inserted into the igntion switch. The leaves aren't very strong due to their design, minimal amount of space and they lose their tension.

There is a parallel path for fuel pump power, 1) fuel pump relay and 2) oil pressure switch for fuel pump. When cranking develops enough oil pressure, switch closes and applies power to fuel pump. You might listen for pump working while cranking. If you don't hear it while cranking, then hear it after cranking for 10 seconds, you can assume its being powered by the oil switch, the one having four wire connector on it. The single wire sender is for the gauge/light.
