Lets just say it spun up a bit. I am going to GUESS well into the 7k range. This is a fairly tame motor with a Comp 262. Oil, temp and noise all seems fine, but what, if any, can I look for in case a problem developes? This motor has about 1500 miles on it, so I really am hopeful the HEI did its job and gave crappy spark upstairs!

I think that you should be ok. The only problem that I can see you having is with the piston skirts, if you used cast pistons. I have gone thru this. They can collapse. But, if you don't hear them slapping you should be ok. Good luck.

A rev limiter is cheap insurance, too.

The pistons I used don't have skirts. They were the common ones from Speed Pro. Maybe thats a good thing! Two days later and everything seems cool.

The worst part is my MSD 6AL is mounted in the engine compartment. My Comp 9000 is sitting in my back seat. I have just been to lazy to hook it up. Guess what. I wired everything yesterday. Tonight I will drop the 9000 in and be safe. Normally I am the one that preaches the cheap insurance of a rev limiter!

Thanks for you responces guys, I feel better now.

It should be fine usually the valve gear takes a beating from valve float {mother natures rev limiter} but I don't think 7000 should hurt you. You might check the compression just to make sure a valve didn't kiss a piston and bend it.
