I bought this motor off a guy on EBAY and it has never run right. It has always vibrated more than I think it should. It does this with the car sitting still. I ended up replacing the clutch and harmonic balancer. It is a 383 externally balanced, and I have the correct flywheel and harmonic balancer. Since the motor was new I never thought it was an internal problem. Today with the engine running a started to take off plug wires one at a time. When I remove the #7 cylinder nothing seems to happen. With it off,I rev the engine, seems to be the same. I swapped plugs, and I swapped wires with no change. I pulled the valve cover and adjusted the valves with no difference. I do not have a compression tester so I did not check that. The firing order is correct 18436572. It is not popping or backfiring. Any ideas before I pull the head....

Jeff, I'd check the compression first before you tear it apart. This way at least you know where you stand.

I would do three things first brfore i pulled the heads.
First, i would check the timing.
Next, have you checked to see if you are getting cross fire. that happen most of the time when the number 5 and 7 spark plugs are laying on each other.
Finally, check to see if you have any vacuum leaks: carb or intake.
If that doesn't fix it, the only other thing i can thing of is that you might have a burnt valve(s).

balboni have you tried going back to #7 cylinder and carefully inspect for a broken valve spring. also this motor may have been balanced to keep it together at high RPM to do that they balance the flywheel and the harmonic balancer also.you said you changed the harmonic balancer? this might be a problem.all my engines get balanced-blue printed and the machinist asked for the balancer and flywheel to be done with the crank rods pistons at the same time. so i said what if i for some reason have to change the balancer or flywheel, do i have to have balanced all over again!he said pretty much. the more i thought about it the more it made sense. but check the valves first it happened to me-couldnt beleive it!
