How is the rest of the ignition wired? Did you just hook up the one wire incorrectly? For instance, you replaced the distributor and hooked the wire up to the wrong terminal on the coil??
If you just installed the one wire incorrectly, then every time the points close, they will short the ignition positive to ground. The coil won't do anything, and you'll get no spark. In the factory wiring, there is a resistance wire from the firewall to the + side of the coil to limit ignition primary current. So, if that's all you did, then there shouldn't be any permanant damage. In an extreme case, you might have barbequed the ignition points.
If you wired the coil completely bass ackwards, then the car will still run but your spark voltage will be really low and performance will stink!
