I bought a 96 Z28 camaro. The check engine light stays on. The reason is the catalytic convertors were taken out. I checked into getting knew cadiletic convertors but it costs an arm and a leg. How do I get the light to go off and not harm the car?

The light is turned on by the OBD-II portion of the engine computer. Short of re-installing the catalytic converters and replacing the wiring and O2 sensors, there is no way to make the light turn off. If it bothers you, remove the bulb. I assume there is no emission testing in Montana - if there is, you have an expensive problem.

Luckily there is not a emissions law in MT. Thanks for the reply.

Somewhere in the system is a sensor telling the computer whether there is a cat or not. Find out which sensor this is.(sorry, not up on my fourth gen info)
You can bypass sensors most of the time by finding out what the optimum resistance they send to the ECM and replacing them with a resisitor of the same measurement.
I wouldn't recommend removing the light bulb as you would lose the notification(assuming you fixed the first problem) if something else went wrong.
