Trying to determine if this alum. bellhousing casting #3872444 is correct for a '69 camaro w/original 350 engine and muncie 4-spd. transmission. I have a 153 tooth flywheel cast# 3791021 and 10.4" clutch. I can not get a starter that will engage the flywheel. Please help, hopefully i won't have to remove bellhousing, etc., because it is installed in the car. kennyD.

Welcome to the club!!

I believe for a small flywheel, the starter required is with the two bolts inline and the outside bolt is shorter in length than the other.

It does not bolt to the bellhousing, so you don't have to fret about taking it off.

However, I do suggest the front starter bracket be bolted on as to help support it. I have seen the starters break, but, in rare cases. It bolts to one of the starter through bolts and to a bolt on the side of the block.

The stock bellhousing for an SS-350/396 is "621" which is designed for the 11" clutch and 14" flywheel. The Z/28 and 327/307's used the "403" bellhousing and a 10.4" clutch with a 12-3/4" flywheel.

You can actualy use the bigger bellhousing with a small clutch but it needs the starter nose for the big clutch setup and a big flywheel designed to accept the small clutch. In addition, the starter brace is unique to the SS350. Z/28 and 327/307 use a different one.
