Stiff Seat Belts

I am just finishing up my 1969 SS, Only interior problem I have , are the seat belts are VERY stiff. Is there a way to soften up the material ?. These are original, and really want to keep them. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Re: Stiff Seat Belts

Wash them in mild detergent (think clothes washing), you can scrub them with a nylon brush if crusty, then while wet massage them Do not scrub the labels. The reason they are stiff is dirt has gotten into the pores of the belt. You need to work them (bend them back and forth) while washing the dirt out of the pores. They will get better, not like they were originally, but better.

If they were sprayed with vinyl paint, that stiffens them up too. If I have to take the hardware off beating them helps let them dry flat indoors, if twisted or creased, you may need a flat weight holding them while drying. If still stiff, rinse and repeat

Re: Stiff Seat Belts

Put them in the dishwasher. If they are faded you can dye them with Rit dye.
