Re: oh that smell

you could probably replace the cowl panel seals under the wiper area, they are the triangle seals on each side that keep debris and water out of the lower cowl, its probably blowing down through your vents, also check your firewall insulation or any missing gromets in the firewall.

Re: oh that smell

At least in theory, the air goes in the cowl hood, not out... and except at full throttle, the flaqpper door is closed and sealed tight. Then on the other hand, old cars do have their oders... check a post of mine "my smelly car" it was live this week.

Re: oh that smell

From the description, it sounds like no flapper is installed. As Jim said, the way GM engineered the system, the flapper only opened up at times when it would be drawing in air.

If you just like the look of the hood, you could certainly try cutting a foam plug to fill the hole. Fabbing a cold air box that seals to the hood might help too. Check exhaust for leaks in the underhood area.

Re: oh that smell

Hi,
I just went through the same problem with my 69.
First thing, close your side panel vents. If this stops the problem then the cause is under the hood.
2nd thing, Make sure your gas cap is working properly and is on tight.
I had a bad cap and I had all kinds of fumes in my car until I changed the cap.
Good luck,
Schoon

Re: oh that smell

I second checking the gas cap. You wouldnt think it would smell that much coming from behind you, but it does.

Re: oh that smell

Have you checked for an exhaust leak coming from underneath the car? Maybe the exhaust gasket(or doughnut) between the header to intermediate pipe could be leaking. Drive with your windows down, until you figure out where the fumes are coming from. Carbon monoxide kills!!!
