67 camaro convertible headers

Does anyone know what headers will work on the 67 camaro conv. I was told
the cross memeber that is bolted on underneath needs to be removed

Re: 67 camaro convertible headers

Darrell -

Welcome to Team Camaro!

It wouldn't be the headers that would cause the problem, but an aftermarket exhaust made to work with headers may cause trouble, particularly if it has an X or H pipe crossover.

I had Dynomax headers on the 327 in my 68, mated to a repro OEM style exhaust (2 1/4" head pipes, transverse muffler behind the rear axle) and everything fit fine above the X-brace.

Guys running aftermarket kits like Flowmaster or Pypes have to shim the X-brace down or leave it off.

But again, the headers end well before the brace, so they aren't the problem...

Re: 67 camaro convertible headers

Darrell - The cross member is not the problem, what you are thinking about is the X-brace which should never be removed from a ragtop. The X-brace does not create a header fitment problem, it limits the size of pipe you can use to connect headers to mufflers. Basically you have to fit the exhaust pipes and drive shaft into the transmission tunnel above the X-brace.

Stuff like what you have been told is the result of not a lot of kit exhaust systems being made for the ragtop and not many guys using 3" or larger pipe. The story gets twisted and well as you see by the time it got to you headers don't fit on ragtops.

As for header choices anything that fits a coupe will work on a ragtop, things to look for are many headers like hooker pro comps hang way too low for street driving. I recommend either Doug's or Thorley's tri-y full length or their shorty headers...
