Unhappy changed from points to hei

On my 67 350 ss camaro, tired of messing with points. So i changed from points to hei distrubitor. I have made sure that i am at top dead center, rotor is pointing to #1 cylinder and my fireing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. I have had backfire through my carb. and a slight mushroom cloud fire that spewed out of the carb and i had to put out with a towel. Am i doing anything wrong? Can anybody advise? Someone please help, before i get the big hammer out.
very frustrated.

Re: changed from points to hei

Reset back to TDC and re-check your rotor ... make sure you are not 180* off ... If you are 180* off, you can pick up dist, spin rotor 1/2 rotation, then drop it back down ... Once dist is in correctly, you could benefit from using a remote starter switch or a buddy to crank the engine while you adjust the timing ... You could also use your timing light while you are attempting to crank the engine... If you set the dist in dead on 0 , you will need to advance the timing to get it to run ... Anywhere between 8 to 12 degrees should get you running ... Fine tune it after you get it warm with smooth idle
