Arrow My security light wont shut off

I am new to this site...Can somebody please give me some advice for wha may be wrong with my 96 camaro RS. The security light came on nd will not shut off. I disconnected the negative battery terminal for 10 minutes nd tried gain, but the security light is still on. The car is still running fine but it makes me a little nervous as the car is supposed to stall out. Any help would be much appreciated.........Tom

There's a link to some VATS info (anti-theft system). This caused a problem on my '98 Chevy Silverado, where security light intermittently came on and truck would not start. Wait 10 minutes and it would start. This drove me crazy for months until someone figured it out. Dealer tried to sell me whole new wiring harness for hundreds of dollars.

I did the permanent bypass trick using a resistor from Radio Shack. Total cost, about $2 and an hour of my time. Still working perfectly a year later. VATS sucks, IMO.....

Re: My security light wont shut off

thanks for the information...I dont quite know enough to bypass the vats system...The odd thing about my security light not shuttin off, is that the cr is not stalling and it is still running fine with the eurity light on. I know when I used to have another 96 RS , the car wouldnt start. But this is odd for it not to shutoff. Hey im glad it is still running but to have this problem sux.

Re: My security light wont shut off

The bypass trick is actually pretty easy to do. If it starts cutting out, or if you can't start it, then I would consider doing it. Get some help from a buddy who has an ohm meter and knows how to use it........

Re: My security light wont shut off

benny, It is the vats (anti theft system) My suggestion would be to take it to a chevy specialist. Not a chevy dealer as they are usually high priced. The security system is cutting off your fuel. (fuel pump shuts down). It could be the ignition or bad wiring. My problem is that My car is running fine but my security ight wont shut off and that means the security is not working. The car should be doing what our car is doing which is not running becasue the anti theft system is kicking in. It sucks but unless you are highly skilled then you hae to take tito a specialist.

Re: My security light wont shut off

Benny, the link I have posted up above states the VATS was used starting in 1996, so I have no idea about a '95 vehicle. The resistor bypass trick is very easy to do, but it may not be applicable t a '95, I just don't know.

Also try www.camaross.com, they seem to cater more to late model f-bodies.
