Vats 92 V-6 Camaro

I am a new member here and I could use some help. I just purchased a 92 v-6 camaro and the previous owner lost the keys. Before I knew about vats, I thought a new ignition cylinder would work. I have heard the code(resistance) could be obtained from the key, and that a security bypass could be bought. My question is, how would I find the vats code on the car without the key, so I could have a key made? Hope this makes sense, I am not real up to date on the new electronic stuff. Thanks...Phil

Contact a local locksmith and see if they can interogate the Vats system to find out what frequency you module is using. One found they can cut you a new key with the proper code. The VATS bypass system is used for remote start systems and the proper code must be used. A locksmith should be alot cheaper than towing it to a GM dealership.

The VATs system is pretty easy to fool. The pellet in the key is simply a resistor. If memory serves there are 14 different resistances. You can purchase these keys from mid america (which is typically a vette site). Or you can actually buy a VATS bypass switch from the same site.

I've soldered in resistors I've purchased from RadioShack. Cheap and easy.
