engine quits then works again?

I have a 96 camaro rs and while driving down the road the other day the motor just quits. i pull off the road and the car will turn over but not start. When i went to meet the tow driver the next morning to get the car towed to the shop it cranked and worked fine. I took it to the shop anyway and they said they could do nothing because no lights were on they drove it around and everything seemed fine. I left there drove about 20 miles got out went to start the car and once again turns over but no start. After about five min it started got me about 1 mile and the motor quits while driving again this time not to start. Got it towed in again and the same thing, everything was fine, no lights starts on first try. The shop hooked it up to the computer and said everything is fine cant do nothing for me. Could bad gas cause this or what, i just got this car two weeks ago and i am stumped! Any info would help thanx.

Welcome to the Club!

Engine is ___________?
If LT1, probably the Opti-No-Spark. Overheats, no spark. Cools off, sparks.
Timng light will prove this.

Re: engine quits then works again?

Im having almost exactly the same problem! Check my thread "Lost Power on Highway!" Some have suggested the ignition switch as being the culprit, but I have not been able to prove this in a controlled environment. I picked up a timing light yesterday so Im going to give my car a full tune-up this weekend.

Re: engine quits then works again?

yea asecondm i read your post but with mine everything works fine when engine died. Radio, lights everything stayed on just motor quit but then after a while the car would start up again. I drove to work tonight and everything is fine but i only work mabe 5 miles from home. Im a little nervous driving around any further right now. Everett wrote about the opti spark, now does that mean that i would have to replace the whole thing or get just new plugs and wires? Thanx for the replies.

Re: engine quits then works again?

The opti-spark is type of distributor in your car. It is located behind the water pump. It is a seprate piece from the plugs and wires .... What Everette is saying is that if you attach a timing light to one of spark plug wires, the light should flash when car is running ... When the car dies, it you attach the timing light and see no spark ( obviously you need a 2nd person here ...one to crank car, one to operate timing light ), then the distributor become the prime suspect ...

BTW, you haven't attempted to bypass or disable the VATS system have you?
