Unhappy Help me save my '98

I have a '98 V6 and a week ago the oil pressure dropped and the engine shuddered, but then all went back to normal. I checked under the hood for a loose/cracked vacuum line but, since the engine was running fine at the time, it was hard to know what to look for.

Anyway, two nights ago it did the same thing except it didn't go back to normal. The engine developed a shudder (not mild), I lost power and the check engine light started blinking (40 times then steady I think). Then I smelled melting plastic.

The next day I checked her out and found black, melted plastic on the exhaust pipe just below the left exhaust manafold and on a near by spark plug cable. The cable appears to be undamaged.

I started the car and found I have no spark on cylinders 3 and 6. Both from the same coil. I then dissconected both spark plug cables and checked for spark to ground, nothing. I replaced the coil, but still have nothing.

I have pulled and inspected the suspect plugs and I checked the voltage to the terminals under the coil. (Reads >10VDC on a DVM)

Please help!

That black melted piece was probably wire conduit that fell on your hot exhaust and melted along with the wire that went through it. It might be the wire for the O2 sensor or one leading to the coil or distributor. Start there.

Re: Help me save my '98

I looked into those items. I think the melted plastic came from a conduit that was on the sparkplug cable.
I was born and raised on the points and condenser distributor and know little about the electronic ignition system (EIS) in my 98. What would happen if a sparkplug cable dead shorted to ground? Is there any chance it would blow a diode (or other component) on the EIS output board?
Thanks again
August

P.S. The dealer installed new cables a few months ago.

Re: Help me save my '98

Ok I took it to the shop and they said I have low compression on cylinder #3 (85-90 psi others are 120 psi) and the trouble code was p300 [multiple/random miss-fire]. I dont see how this would cause the PCM to permantly shut down cylinders 3 & 6 and if it did I would think it would also shut of the fuel injectors to those cylinders.

They suggest I replace the PCM $200 (parts) and if that doesn't fix it then I would have to do a valve job $1100+.

(They said I need the valve job to correct the compression problem soon anyway, but if replacing the PCM fixes the imediate problem then the valve job could wait a while.)
