Unhappy strange growling

Hey everyone! Gotta love the net! I find chats and boards for everything.

We have a 1987 5.7 350 Iroc. We love this car!

The trouble started driving back from work. kind of a clunk and growl in the middle and toward the back of the car. it is intermittent, and only does it accelerating. the tranny doesn't slip, and was rebuilt in January. we checked and changed the oil in the rear end, and the gears look really good. any ideas? Please help. This is our baby, and we waited awhile to get it. now we're afraid to drive it.

Thanks!
Todd and Lisa

Check the trans mount to see if it's loose or broken, also check the u-joints and look around to see if the driveshaft may be rubbing something. Even though the gears look good, there could be some play in them causing the noise. Hope htis helps

Re: strange growling

see if you have a broken motor mount. maybe the fan shroud is hitting the fan? put the car in drive, foot on the brake, give it some gas have someone stand on the side of the car, have the hood up and see if the motor 'flops' around.
check that tranny mount too.

1968 that started life and a 6 banger with a PG. Now it's a 350 with a TKO600, Moser 12 bolt, Speedtech LCA/UCA, ATS Tall Spindles, Hotchkis Springs, Forgeline ZX3P, C5 (Kore3) brakes with other cool stuff from Ron Davis, Vintage Air and soon to be Terminator EFI.

Re: strange growling

I'm guessing the ujoints also, they might look okay, but they could be bad, can you take one apart and look at it, or twist it, see if theres an bind in it.

On the third gen Camaros, it is common for the trans mount and the U-joints to go bad after 50,000 miles. I bet that is the problem also.

Re: strange growling

hello again, well we changed the u-joints and checked the mounts the noise got better but it is still there, the noise seems to be coming more from under the shifting lever and is still only when it shifts up, also we tried shifting it manually and didnt hear the noise. any suggestions?

Re: strange growling

Sometimes exhaust pipes, converters, mufflers, or even e-brake cables can come loose and make contact at places that they shouldnt. This can make all kinds on strange noise. See if you can find a muffler place (to put the car on the rack) and let you take a good hard look at everything underneath. Shake, Pull, push, to make sure nothing is loose......Jb
