Oil pressure reading

I installed a mechanical oil pressure gauge. When I start the engine (327) the pressure only reads about 15-20 psi. After about 3-5 minutes it's up to 40 psi, and then when the engine is warm it's down to about 25-30 psi, as would be expected.

Any idea why it would read so low at start up? Could it be from air in the hose to the gauge? Should I have bled this line when I installed it? I thought it would work the air out, but it's been about 3 months now with no change.

Thanks.

Dave

Re: Oil pressure reading

The air in the line will not affect the reading. Although air is compressable, it will compress to the same pressure as the oiling system and the gauge will read correctly.

Re: Oil pressure reading

It's an autometer gauge. I believe it's 1/8". I'll have to double check.

Re: Oil pressure reading

if your tubing is plastic make sure you didn't over tighten it. you can actually pinch the tubing almost closed and not cut through it. (happened to me!) it acted just like what your describing.hope thats it easy fix. good luck

Re: Oil pressure reading

Another alternative is go with the autometer electric sending unit and gauge. No hot oil inside your car or crimped lines like your seeing. Here's a pic of the unit installed.

Re: Oil pressure reading

one thing to note here is if you use royal purple or torco synthetic race oils the readings will be lower at start up then climb a bit .
I noticed this after changing oil from torco to mobil 1 synthetic.
there is at least a 10 psi difference between the 2.
