Question Will not crank at operating temp?

I hope someone can help! I own a 1981 Z/28 that will not crank at operating temp. I have 12.5 volts at battery at the time it will not crank. I think it may be the starter getting to hot, But not sure. Has anyone seen this problem?

Yes it could very well be your starter getting too hot. do you have headers on the car? Could also be that your timing is too far advanced.

Re: Will not crank at operating temp?

19694speed, Thanks very much for your reply. And yes the car has headers. I thought I might try a header wrap, to keep heat away from stater. Or a factory heat sheild. Will the factory heat sheild work with headers? As far as the timing, I checked and its ok. Thanks again for any information.

Re: Will not crank at operating temp?

Does it just click and do nothing? Or does it crank but reeeal slow? If it wants to crank your problem is definatly an over heated starter. For that I would highly recommend a heat wrap to go around the starter. They are very effective and are cheap and easy. If it just clicks it could be either the starter OR the solenoid. For that you need to get a f*rd style remote solenoid and mount it away from the heat source. Or be like me and just do both and never have to worry about it.

rlovell383, It will not even click. Its like you took the battery off of the car. I can jump it with my truck. Or I can let it cool for about an hour or so, And it will start right up. Thanks for your reply. Todd

Sounds like your solenoid is frozen from the header heat. They do make a hi temp solenoid for that problem.I purchased one from mccp 815-648-1700
