EGR valve code when all parts are new.

86 Z28 350. My mechanic claims he has replaced everything in the EGR system.
When holding a steady 70/75/80 for about 10 miles the check engine light will come on and throw a 32 code. Sometimes it will go out in 10 or so miles but sometimes it stays on until you finally stop and shut it down. This does not happen in the winter. Only happens intermitantly on hot days when engine temp above 195/200.
Any suggestions on fixing this problem?

Re: EGR valve code when all parts are new.

Do you have a performance exhaust system?

A false code 32 will set with lower than stock backpressure.

Re: EGR valve code when all parts are new.

I had an 86 Firebird but only the 5.0 engine and it would throw a check engine light (not sure of code) but I remember everything pointing to the EGR valve. They also replaced everything around there and always came back after awhile I finally found there was a 1/8 plastic vac line on the back of the carb that went to I believe the MAP sensor on the firewall. It had rubber hose fittings on each end. Anyway, it would plug up the sensor with oil because of the 1/8" tube and then set a code. I finally just installed 1/4" tubing from the carb to the sensor and never had another issue. I don't remember mine being temp related but might be worth a look at. It's always hot in AZ.

Cool Re: EGR valve code when all parts are new.

To answer one question.... I have a TPI setup with oversize runners and they put some gadget on the front of the throttle body to smooth the airflow.
The other.... Edekbock headers and 2 1/2 pipe all the way back. High flow converter and flowmaster muffler.
The vacumn line was replaced when the new EGR valve was installed.

Did the exhaust temperature sensor screwed into the EGR valve get replaced?
Sensor does not come with new EGR valve, must buy separately.

Re: EGR valve code when all parts are new.

Valve, sensor and vacumme hose replaced at same time.
What was not replaced is the O2 sensor on the exhaust. Don't know if that will affect things.

That explains it.

I've seen it several times, in fact, on my own 88 truck with Edelbrock headers and 3" system with a high-flow cat converter and muffler.

The conditions must be at least 50 MPH, closed loop, in high gear for several minutes. It's a false code 32, and there is no fix for it. It's the price we pay for that performance gain.

Thanks for the information. It is something I can live with although it can be annoying.

Re: EGR valve code when all parts are new.

Just a follow up question....
Why does it only do it when it is hot outside and the engine temp goes above 195/200. I never have a problem in the winter. Only when the outside temp gets above 75/80 degrees.

Re: EGR valve code when all parts are new.

EGR Temp-controlled Vacuum Valve ...depending upon Engine & Model-year they have different opening/closing opearting temps ...it's just possible they've installed one with incorrect temp-range ?
