Question RS relay switch

I have heard that thru the years the relay switch can get gunked up with dirt, grime etc. Do these switches go bad often or do they just need to be cleaned out? What is the best way to go about cleaning them, I have seen several posts here to spray all the ports with carb cleaner. Is there any other methods people have used?
Thanks,
Jason
