Tachometer problem

I have an 80 Z28. When I am spinning the engine up past about 4700 the tach starts to jump around. ANy ideas?

Re: Tachometer problem

Might need a HEI ignition module.

Re: Tachometer problem

Mallory HEI and factory tach. When I have the timing light on it the tach seems very accurate. It is just when you are on a run going past 4700 the tach gets wacky and I am not sure if I am approaching my 5900 shift or not.

Re: Tachometer problem

I would exchange/borrow an HEI ditributor just to see if this swapout corrects the problem.

If it did, then I would know where the problem is at and fix it from there. You might give MSD a call with all part numbers, stock & MSD, and ask for their advice.

Re: Tachometer problem

This sounds like another manifestation of the sqaure wave vs. syne wave tach signal again. I would try this inexpensive filter:
