Question 00 Camaro question

Yeah, I have a 2000 Camaro, its a 3.8 v6 w/ automatic transmission. For the past 2 days its been acting really funny. The car overall seemed much weaker, it was noticably slower. I would be driving on a fairly flat road doing 45ish with cruise control on and the car would just keep slightly accelerating then backing off, accelerating, back off, etc. During this time my "Service engine soon" light came on. So this morning I went to AutoZone and had them see what triggered the light. He said it was just my gas cap. He told me to drive it around and if the light didn't go out after about 8 cycles to come back. So I drove around and the car started to do the accel, back off, thing I mentioned earlier. Then the light went out, and the car ran perfect for the rest of the night. So my question(finally), is... is that normal? I mean, does the computer really cause that all because of the gas cap? Or what? Sorry for the story. Thanks everyone, great site.

Re: 00 Camaro question

seems odd......a loose or leaking gas cap would usually give you a P0440 code, which is an evap leak. (I think, don't know all the codes off my head obviously, but we see alot of evap leaks) But you normally wouldn't get any driveabilty issues with it.....do You happen to know if that was the code he pulled? and if not, what was the code?

Re: 00 Camaro question

I'm fairly certain that was the code. Also, the car is still running fine.

Re: 00 Camaro question

thats strange.....a P0440 shouldn't cause any driveabilty issues at all. I had figured you were gonna come back on here and tell me it was a P0441 maybe and the purge valve was stuck open or something to that effect...anyway, so long as it's working well I guess there is really nothing to worry about, good luck, Jeff
