Engine shuts off when put in gear

I need some help, I have an 88 Camaro Iroc Z28 305 automatic with a 2 barrel. It is a stock engine and is all of a sudden shutting off when you put it in gear. We have replaced the following plugs, wires, dist cap, fuel filter, and gas. We also replaced some sensors. The engine starts fine but when you go to drive or reverse it shuts off. It does not lunge forward it just cuts off. Any ideas what I can do to fix this.

Thanks
Maria

I am guessing it is an automatic trans and that your lock up converter is stuck.

Re: Engine shuts off when put in gear

Stuck Torque Converter Clutch. I had a friggin Corsica do that the day I bought it.

IF that is the problem, the only thing I can suggest is to disconnect the TCC wire from the transmission. The car will probably die a few more times before the clutch dissengages. Once it finally lets go, forget about it and the fact that your highway mpg went down (until you feel like getting it rebuilt).
