Spring pocket bolts keep spinning...

Left side came out easily. One came out on the right side, the other 2 started backing out, then POP... the threaded piece came loose. Of course you can't get to them. What is the best way to remove the bolts now? How do i fix this so I can reinstall the spring pockets? I can take a pic if it will help. Scott

Common problem; the cage nut breaks.

Melt the bolt heads with a torch. Hacks cut holes in the floor.

Re: Spring pocket bolts keep spinning...

you could also take the boltheads off with a cutoff wheel.
Once the spring mount is out of the way, you'll be able to fish the broken peices out.

And yes, my floor under the back seat is swisscheesed where a previous owner hack went in that way....

Re: Spring pocket bolts keep spinning...

I can cut off one bolt, but the other I cant get the cutter in there. How do you reweld the thread blocks without going thru the floor?
Thanks for the quick responses. Scott

Re: Spring pocket bolts keep spinning...

You can take a flea wrench 9/16 wrench, heat it with a torch, and bend the box end 90*.

Let it cool, then use it to go throught the slits and hold the nut, unscrew the bolt. Pull out the nut with the wrench and roll out the remaining clip.

As JimM said, more than once I drilled with a 1 inch hole saw from within to get to the area and used real washers and nuts.

Use antiseize when assembling, you'll appreciate you did later in life.

Re: Spring pocket bolts keep spinning...

A Dremel with a cutoff wheel works great for getting the hard to get bolt heads. Went through the same thing this week. No reason to cut up your floor board.

Re: Spring pocket bolts keep spinning...

I think I will be able to eventually get them out, but how do you install & anchor the new cage nuts so that new bolts can be re-intalled. The above post mentioned using nylon nuts- how did you holt the nut to keep it from spinning? Again, thanks for eberyones help. Scott

Re: Spring pocket bolts keep spinning...

using any kind of nuts would require access from above, ie: holes in the floor.

New "good" style j-nuts, new bolts, and some anti-sieze will suffice here. There's not a lot of stress on these fasteners, the springs push the plate up against the floor under power.

Re: Spring pocket bolts keep spinning...

I ground down a 9\16 wrench on the box end to fit into the slots.
also put a slight bend in it to get access.
dont grind up a good wrench use a taiwan tuffy wrench.

The cage nuts are actually a type of clip nut that installs easily from the bottom. You'll be able to figure it out once you get everything out of the way. Read this thread = pictures and everything! https://www.camaros.net/forums/showth...ighlight=j-nut
