Car is Mis-firing???

I'm experiencing a problem with me car. It's a 78 camaro....i guess the base version. It had a 305 but i changed it out for a 350. I have a 2 barrel on it for now. Whenever it is idle or when im driving it, i constantly hear a popping out of my exhaust, and sometimes under my hood (sounds like it's near my carb, but thats only when you give it gas). Anyway the popping is annoying, and im told it's mis-firing. Any ideas on how to fix the problem? thanks

Re: Car is Mis-firing???

First step would be to verify your ignition system. Make sure the plug wires are correct (1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2). Make sure none of the plugs are arcing to a header or other metal object and that there are no cracks or holes in the insulation. Make sure the cap and rotor are in good shape. Make the plugs are properly gapped and not cracked.

Another system worth a look would be the air injection system. Ignition problems should show a noticeable performance problem. However, when the engine is warm the air injection system should stop pumping air into the exhaust system. The fresh air can cause popping in a rich exhaust without a noticable performance problem.

I do not know anything about cars, if you can elaborate, i would appreciate it. Don't know how to verify my ignition system. To be honest i have no clue what your talkin bout. My apologies on being totally clueless. But if you can reword it better, that would be great. Thanks

Re: Car is Mis-firing???

I would start with a Chiltons, very basic, available at any auto parts store.
