on another thread, a member states he wants to replace the 283 that came with his '67 Camaro. Am I losing my mind? did the '67 ever come with a 283? I don't know squat about the technical aspects of motors, but it's my understanding chevy decided to go with the 302 in the Z-28 and not the 283?? You would think a guy with 2 Camaros would know better!! obviously, I should look it up instead of getting ridiculed here.. but I deserve it.
mike: I have no idea... maybe those are codes that were created but the engines were never actually used. I've seen that before in books. They will list certain codes then where it says how many cars came with that code it says: 0
interesting ....
it was not production so this is more of a trivia answer, but the prototype 1967 Z/28 was first built with a 283 because the Trans Am limit was 305. They later got the approval to build the special 302 engine.
Is THIS the thread (by madsen55)? If so, his/her signature says "Robin 1967 Camaro Coupe", but HIS/HER CAR is actually a 68, so no, it would not have come with a 283.
(I say "HIS/HER" since Robin can be either a male or female name.)
Yes Camaro's came with the 283 engine, but these were for export models only (please correct me if wrong Kurt).
My 1967 Camaro should also have the 283 with powerglide as it has the MJ code and it was assembled in Switzerland. All the Belgian (Antwerp) Camaro's I know of also have the 283 engine.
I hate to huirt your feelings, But the early Export Camaro was the 283 Low Compression when sent to Europe. You would get the 283 Low Compression, or the 4P car which was actually a 327 HP motor.
Mine is the 327 HP 4 Speed.
The Swiss had tax laws that made the 283 a necessity in 67. I'm not aware of any other European country having similar laws and 283's have been found in no other vehicles other than the Swiss cars, built for Swiss consumption.
We've found no evidence that the 283 was installed in any NOR produced cars.
We are always open to new data, so please share whatever you may have.
What can you tell us about the tag you posted? Do you have a pic of the NOR trim tag too?
I couldn't figure out the Hubraum (cylinder capacity) on that German tag. 303 ccm is way low. Finally saw that very faint 5, as in 5303 (5.3L).
That's a full-size engine code, but the engine wouldn't bolt up in a Camaro due to the rams-head exhaust manifolds.
Do you know the history of the car?
I was as disbelieving as you Ed, but it was what GM put in it...
The whole truck was with original owner and as it left the factory, except for service parts - I almost bought it.
It had a camper on it that it had hauled around it's whole life.
It was a June build also - wonder if GM was cleaning up the engine racks at the end of the year ???
Ed
You are correct (as usuual) that the KL is the 327/275hp from the full size but the tranny is a TH400 not the 350. No turbo 350's in full size for '67. I just had to chime in since you guys usually know way more than me on the camaros
I have a 67 Impala SS with KL motor in addition to my 67 RS L30/M20
That's okay Craig. I wrote it wrong, but meant it right!!!???
(I was on the phone with a very irate customer and posted too quickly)
I'll edit it to say Turbo 400.
I'm curious as to why Chevrolet used a passenger car engine in a truck!!
Ed
