steering gear box opinion needed.

hi, ive been reading how alot of people are going to the 3rd gen power steering gearbox changeover and wanted some opinions. i have a 2 1/2 lock to lock power steering gear box original to my car, but it needs new seals because its leaking everywhere. question is should i have the original rebuilt, or should i upgrade now to the newer 3rd gen box. whats the difference between them? thanks.

Re: steering gear box opinion needed.

The ratio will be about the same, 2 1/2 turns lock to lock.
The big difference is the ampunt of steering boost. In the '60's, power steering was new, and they wanted everyone to know it was there. They dialed in so much assist that a 4 year old could parallel park the car, an adult could spin the wheel with his pinky even when the car was stationary.

That's how your original box feels now, and unless you have it revalved, that's how it will feel after you have it rebuilt.

By the 80's, people started talking about "road feel." The amount of steering power assist was reduced in all cars, and reduced dramatically in "sports cars" so we could better "feel the road."

The "thirdgen box" was used in late '80's IROC Z's and TransAm's. As far as a conventional saginaw steering gear, they are as good as they ever got.

If you prefer to keep your original casting, there are rebuilders who can revalve it for this type of "feel." That will undoubtedly cost more tho.

Re: steering gear box opinion needed.

in my opinion the old steering was like steerring a boat. the third generation steering is like steering a sports car. so what would you like to steer? a boat or sports car?

Don't forget to post your results
it's good for the thread

IMO change to an AGR box. Old one out, in with the new. Bolts right in, no modifiactions. Your options are 12:1 or variable speed. I went with the variable on my 69. I had a leaky original box also.
