Leaf Spring Cushion Thickness

Can anyone tell me how thick a spring cushion for a 12-bolt rearend using 5-leaf springs should be? I have a set of "supposedly" NOS pads. They are about 1/2" thick?? Does this sound right....The 5-leaf spring is about 1 5/16" thick. Now add 1" for both the rubber cushions and the total thickness is about 2 5/16". The spring perch is only about 1 7/8" deep. Do I just "Crank em down" expecting the rubber pads to compact almost 1/2"? Is the shock plate even supposed to make contact with the spring perch when everything is torqued up? Could these be Mono-leaf cushions? Are there different cushions for 4 leaf vs 5 leaf?

I know that this has been covered here before, but I can't find it! It seems that it is going to be one of those days.....something in the ol' brain goes "pffsssst", and nothing makes sense!!

HELP!! Any insight at this point would be greatly appreciated.....Jb

Re: Leaf Spring Cushion Thickness

No, they are like about between 3/16" and a 1/4" thick.

You aren't just looking at the thickness of them at both lips are you?? B/c if so, yes, probably a 1/2" thick on the outsides..

I would ebay the rubber and use poly b/c they will be harder and will hold up better in the long run!! My car is 100 percent poly now!!

No, the body of the cushion is 1/2". The lip is another 1/8" or so.

I guess I'm hunting for the poly pads! Thanks...Jb

Re: Leaf Spring Cushion Thickness

JB -

I've never seen an NOS one, but the repros I bought were about that thick. they compress quite a bit, and no the plates don't have to touch the perch.
