72 camaro pot joint seal replacement

Hello all,

I have a 72 camaro not tilt or telescoping steerign collumn that needs to have the pot joint seal replaced. the pot joint seals the steering shaft to the intermediate shaft of the sttering assembly which conencts to the rag joint then the steerign box. Question is would you drop the box and the intermediate shaft to replace or the steering column. Also some insight on where to find the pot joint seal and clip would be helpfull.

Thanks,
Tom

number 45 is the seal that is broken and its retaining clip is number 42. Is it recomended to replace the joint while servicing the seal? if so which parts should be bought and where would one aquire them.

The pot joint seal that you want is GM #7802919. I was discontinued about a year ago by GM. You might find it still on the shelf at some GM dealers. And there still ought to be some available through Camaro, Chevelle, and other GM vehicle suppliers. You might try www.oldmusclecars.com Plug in the part number on Google, eBay, etc.

Weather or not you can find the part will probably answer if you should do this yourself or not. Not tilt columns are fairly easy to work on. I rebuilt many many tilt columns back in the day so I wouldnt be afraid of it. But if you have any hesitation, then just send it out since it can be quite aggrivating at times if you not familiar with columns.

Re: 72 camaro pot joint seal replacement

If I were to send it out, where would I send it. Are there any people here that do reputable work?

Thanks,
Tom
