brakes jerk left

I replaced the front wheel cylinders on my 69 convert. I also put a new drum on the pass. side along with new pads all around. When I apply the brakes, the car jerks left then pulls right. Do I need to adjust the pads, turn down the old drum? What could cause this??

Re: brakes jerk left

Yes all of the above, also did you clean the new drum, any grease prints on the shoes
can cause pulling, or grabbing.

Re: brakes jerk left

sounds like your brake adjustment is off...I WOULD TURN YOUR OTHER DRUM ALSO ,IT PROBALLY HAS A RIDGE ON IT AND IS GLAZED OVER ...YOU WANT A SLIGHT DRAG ON YOUR DRUMS AS YOU TURN THEM BY HAND, NOT TIGHT, BUT NOT LOOSE, JUST ENOUGH TO HEAR THE DRUM AND SHOE BARELY CONTACTING..ONE OTHER WAY TO SET THE CORRECT ADJUSTMENT THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE DO IS ADJUST YOUR ADJUSTER TIGHT SO YOU CANT SPIN THE DRUMS BY HAND AND THEN BACK THEM OFF TILL THEY HAVE A SLIGHT DRAG..

Re: brakes jerk left

If the rubber flex lines go bad they can cause this situation also.

Re: brakes jerk left

I would replace the other drum. In class they told us to turn both of the drums to the same diameter, seems pointless to turn a new drum out to match a used one. I'd check the front suspesion parts for looseness as well.

Re: brakes jerk left

I ordered a new drum, will get it on this weekend. I have a good mechanic set up to do a PA state inspection on CUPCAKE (named after my dad). Since I am a novice backyard mechanic and the brakes are a pretty important safety factor, I am asking him to check them out for me as well!!
THANKS

Re: brakes jerk left

x 3 on replacing the rubber flex lines. They may look fine on the outside, but be swollen shut on the inside. Before you replaced the brakes, it may be that everything wasn't working well at all, and now some of it working correctly and some not. If you readjust and still have issues, look at replacing the hoses.

Dodging all the buggies around Ship is hard enough without flaky brakes.

Re: brakes jerk left

Since you have replaced the ft cylinders you could also have a lil air that needs to come out still.

Re: brakes jerk left

The hoses are a cheap and good idea to replace only 19.99 a hose..like everybody said you cant tell if they are swollen on the inside or not!

Re: brakes jerk left

okay I replaced the drum, bought new hoses, but I'll be DANGED if I can break the brake lines free from the rubber hoses. ANY ideas on what I can do to get them free?? I used a line wrench, WD40 and still have the fittings "sorta" rounded off. Oh while taking for a test drive, the shifter cable broke, that question is in the transmission forum!!
R we havin fun yet..... YOU BET!!!

Re: brakes jerk left

vise grips and WD40 did the trick on the rear, I changed the rear wheel cylinders last night. I will probably try the good ole vise grips on the front as well!!
THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!! I don't knowif the leaking wheel cylinder fixed the "jerk left" yet because I still haven't changed out the shifter cable.
