How many clicks on self adjuster?

Hey guys. I just put new drums and pads on my 68. The drums go right on pretty snug on the rear and I have not clicked the self adjuster. If I leave it be, wont it adjust to the right setting on its own backing up and braking?

If not, how many basic clicks on a new setup?

Re: How many clicks on self adjuster?

they will adjust, but you definitely want to get them adjusted out to start with. two reasons, first is that if the shoes aren't adjusted against the drum you're losing braking power, your pedal will have to go farther before you get any good contact between shoe and drum. second is that it'll take a LOT of backing up and braking to get them adjusted against the drums. take five minutes now and do it and don't go driving down the road with 10% of your braking power. take it from someone who took their car for a quick spin around the block without adjusting the drums.

Adjust the stars out till you feel a little friction when spinning the wheel. if you spin the wheel and it just spins and spins, keep going on the star wheel. i usually go until the wheel stops within a turn after i spin it. then hit your brake pedal a few times to get every thing to settle and do the spin check again.

Re: How many clicks on self adjuster?

With drums on..stop on the brakes a few times...this aligns up the shoes
Now remove the drum and adjust up the shoes more till the drum just slides one
Repeat again...
AND make sure the E Brake is backed off before adjusting
Once adjusted up adjust the EB

My Spelling is not incorrect...it is creative

Re: How many clicks on self adjuster?

Slide the drums over the shoes several times to get the feel of the drag....Adjust the brakes till the drums have a slight, not heavy, drag while sliding them.....Do both sides evenly or it'll pull to one side or the other....No more adjustment will be required after this method of adjustment and you'll have a nice brake pedal feel!

Re: How many clicks on self adjuster?

As suggested, put the drum on to center the shoes only after shortening the length of the adjuster.
Then adjust the adjuster out for the shoes to touch.
Standard practice is to adjust until the drum is tight, then back off 5-7 notches, same number for both sides.

Standard pratice step 2 is have one drum on and the other off..adjust one side(as everret stated above) till it has proper drag..remove the drum from the side you just did then install drum on other side your about to do, and repeat!
