Manual to power steering swap

I have manual steering in my '68 Camaro. I just bought a power steering kit from Classic Performance Parts (CPP). I managed to get the pump and pulley to fit and line up. They claim the whole kit is a direct replacement bolt in but the gear box is too long. It hits the engine cross member of the subframe when I align the bolt holes. CPP took a look at their subframe they have in their shop and swear that I should have about an inch of clearence on my stock subframe. Does anyone have any ideas about how I can fix this? Is there anything else I can do to make this kit fit without doing any major cutting and fabrication?

Re: manual to power steering swap

It should be a Saginaw #800 steering box.
This box fits all sorts of GM vehicles.

If it's not fitting, and you're using the right set of holes , then there's something really wrong.
I would contact them and ask what box they sent you to confirm ( ask them, don't tell them what you have in you hand ...) it's the right unit.
They have been known to 'mess-up' ...

You can get the parts to do the swap yourself (or finish it) from any wrecking yard or over the counter from an auto parts store.

Here is a great write-up by one of the site members on doing the quick-ratio swap - http://69camaro.nextmill.net/steering.html

Re: manual to power steering swap

The PS box should fit snug into the crossmember. CPP sells a knock off of the 600 series boxes that they call the 500 series.

You should use the same mounting holes as the manual box - 2 lower bolts and one upper bolt - nearest the crossmember

If its not lining up, its not the right box.
