Im looking for a new power steering box, is there any major significance between a 2 1/2 - 3 to lock or a 3 1/2 - 4 1/4 to lock besides the obvious?
Is it mostly personal preference?
If you go with an original box, they both suck. It is best to upgrade to the newer "firm feel" box, like the "special" steering 3rd generation boxes or a new AGR box.
I agree on the "firm feel". I have a Lares 972 box, which is a quick ratio first gen box with IROC internals. It was a direct swap for the original (turned in for core). No adapters, etc. I got mine at a local Advance Auto, I have seen them available on Ebay, I think NPD (National Parts Depot) is selling them too.
using a quick ratio box is the best way to go but does take a little getting used to as the steering is fast especially if you have the long pitman arm and short steering arms as these provide the fastest steering. I do sell brand new GM 670 quick ratio steering box w/ 12.7:1 ratio and rack n pinion valving. they come complete with a new rag joint and adapters to convert from the metric o ring seal to your standard flared lines. They bolt right in with no modification necessary.
