Stainless Hoses ok for Power steering?

I just got off the phone with Holley and they told me that Earls stainless hoses are not to be used for power steering. They are only rated for 1500# and that they have special power steering hoses rated for 2500#. Does that sound right? Does anybody have stainless hoses on their pressure side? How much pressure is a power steering pump putting out?

When I talked to Summit they never mentioned any problem when I said I was using it for power steering.

Re: Stainless Hoses ok for Power steeriong?

For 1 never listen to the guys behind the counter...if they really knew about things like this they would be doing a different job for a lot more money.

you need the correct grade of tubing for the hot/heat and pressure...a power steering specialist will be able to tell you
An alternative that looks smart is put stainless sleeving over the top of the stock hose then at each end use heavy duty electrical shrink tubing...the aircraft grade.

My Spelling is not incorrect...it is creative

Re: Stainless Hoses ok for Power steering?

Standard aircraft hose won't work, not enough pressure rating.
The only stainless braided hose that I see used successfully is the Teflon lined hose. You need the proper fittings for the ends.

Dave I never said use aircraft hose
use electrical shrink...aircraft std..it is heavier than normal electical shrink, and that is just as a 'finish' for the ends of stainless braid over correct type hose....
If a suitable pressure/compound stainless braided hose cant be sourced.

Re: Stainless Hoses ok for Power steering?

What David said is right. I bought the power steering hose setup for my March pulley setup. They are the lines that are teflon lined and had special connectors.

Re: Stainless Hoses ok for Power steering?

You cannot use fuel hoses for power steer applications, unless expressly stated. Power steering fluid will eat away at reguar hose over time.

Re: Stainless Hoses ok for Power steering?

Yeah, I finally found that Aeroquip TFE Hose. Looks good up to 2500# and has a teflon core. Plan to get that with some steel fittings. Think things are looking good now.

Thanks!

You can't use them on the high side, but the low side they work perfectly fine as the pressures aren't 1500+ PSI.

Re: Stainless Hoses ok for Power steering?

We had a moble hydrolic/pnematic service guy in the workshop yesterday...
I asked him
He said they can make up correct bradded hoses, and about thesame price as std hoses.
But they need the orginal ends because of the threads on early sagaw boxes.

Some one just said power steering fluid eats the standard rubber hose is this true as I have it on the low pressure side of my system.

I found the hose fittings that go from a 6 AN hose to a 6 AN female. I will use the inserts that have the correct flange/18mm/16mm thread size. I think as long as you put the right fittings in, they should couple up to the hose fine. If not, I will know in about 4 days when my stuff gets here. ha,ha

Re: Stainless Hoses ok for Power steering?

I used the Russell stainless steel with teflon inner lining. The fittings are super easy to assemble. Russell was bought out by Edelbrock a couple years ago so everybody and their mother should be able to get you the hose and fittings. Here's a link to the website, hope this helps.
