Re: Brake fluid

The DOT 5 fluid I used once was tinted a purple color, I thought the color was to ID DOT 5 fluid, but may have been just a brand thing. Otherwise DOT 3 & 4 are clear and interchangeable w/ DOT 5.

That's my experience with DOT 5, (used once in motorcycle brakes and didn't like it) we'll see if other's experience(s) are the same

Re: Brake fluid

You can not mix dot 5 brake fluid because it is silicone. It is a purple color. I have it in my car for 12 years with no issues. Plus it doesnt eat up paint. I would only use it in a new system.

Re: Brake fluid

X2 on using the dot 5 silicone fluid; especially on a show quality car with painted suspension.

Re: Brake fluid

I was really hoping purple was a good indicator. Yes, dot 3/4 can't be mixed with dot 5. dot 4 cost a paint job on the Camaro about 5 years ago. It was a expensive lesson on being care when replacing parts. I was really hoping purple was a good indicator. I replaced the entire brake system on one of my bikes, and can't remember what type of fluid I used. Wish I could remember something...anything.
