Upper control arm bolt fell out

So I noticed a change in my steering yesterday and started looking around. I found the passenger side upper control arm had the forward bolt missing. It wasnt there at all,.... There isnt anything on the front side of the arm but the bushing. I assume it is missing a cup washer and the bolt... Can anyone tell me where I can get a replacement and / or what size the bolt is?

Can i just reinstall or does this adjust the castor /camber and is more than just putting the bolt back in?

I think this is one of the few areas I havent touched yet on the Camaro..Time to learn something new..

Thanks for any help!!

Re: Upper control arm bolt fell out

I used the poly super kit from PST for my front end. I even lost one of the bushings and they sent me another for free. Great customer service.

Re: Upper control arm bolt fell out

I believe it is a 3/8 fine thread grade 8 with a lock washer, somewhere between 1" to 1.5" long. You can get them from Ace or somewhere with decent bolt selection but the cup washers usually have to be purchased as a set of four. If you use a little LocTite on the threads and use suspension grease between the cup washer and bushing it helps. What happens is that sometimes they'll bind together and with the arm moving up and down it will back it out. The grease helps. You should be able to get it back in with the front end jacked up a little and the tire removed. It may take a pry bar if it shifted.

Re: Upper control arm bolt fell out

Thanks for the responses. It doesnt look like it shifted so it should be pretty easy to get back in.

I appreciate the help.

Loc-Tite on the threads or safety wire the bolt heads.

Re: Upper control arm bolt fell out

Kevan,
I appreciate the offer. I went today and got a bolt and washer from Ace to get me through until the weekend. We have the "Back to the 50's" show in Minneapolis this weekend and i am sure I can find what I need there.

Re: Upper control arm bolt fell out

just use a grade 8 fine thread 3/8" bolt and a washer from a sway bar end link.

you don't plan sincerity.
you have to make it up on the spot.

wanna hear about 20 years ago when i was too smart to know any better?

Re: Upper control arm bolt fell out

I had problems with with my control arm shafts loosing the retaining bolt and allowing the poly bushing to squirt off. It happened twice, so I finally replaced the control arm shaft with a much beefier one from Globalwest Suspension. The replacement shafts have threaded ends that accept a washer and a nut. Much better than the threaded socket on the stock shafts. It was an investment in assuring me it wouldn't happen again. I think they also sell individual bushings.

Re: Upper control arm bolt fell out

Mine was missing a bolt and washer for 5 years before I started this full suspension / steering setup replacement

kinda glad to hear I'm not alone and the reason above as to why it backs out makes good sense to me

Re: Upper control arm bolt fell out

Control arm movement up/down, will eventually cause washer to turn , usually the cup washer is seated against the control arm bushing sleeve serrations and bushing movement slides around inside cup, Good ole snot grease works well here to eliminate this as well as squeaks.
