can you drill a mono leaf spring

can u chisel off the welded on centering pin and drill a hole in a mono leaf spring.
i need to bolt on a 4 degree shim and install a new center bolt.
note the centering pin is on the bottom of the spring and the shim needs to be bolted on the top of the spring.

Re: can you drill a mono leaf spring

Good luck on that! I have a chunk of an old monoleaf I was going to drill a hole through and use as a spacer - couldn't even scratch it with a good quality bit. The spring steel is heat tempered and is tough as hell. I have a friend who works in a spring shop - he told me that they use a machine that that punches the holes.

Re: can you drill a mono leaf spring

I wouldn't drill a hole. They are really thick in the middle. Not like a normal spring with a stack of thinner leaves. They're pretty brittle too. I would think it would eventually break at the point of the hole.
