Re: steering gear box Q's

The 1969 Camaros had power gear boxes with variable ratio. They were 16:1 ratio right on center. (Not particularly fast) And had quite light effort to steer unless your gearbox came out of a 1969 Z28. Then the effort will be somewhat heavier.

If you really want quicker steering with heavier effort, then I would suggest a Gen III power gear (1982 through 1993) from a car with Z28 or Level III or FE2 suspension.

Re: steering gear box Q's

Mike, the Gen III swap is mainly to correct the ultra light steering touch that a first gen box has. There's an item called a torsion bar in the box that sets the steering effort....first gen and many other cars are set up for very light effort, third gen and other cars have heavier effort. You can get a 12.7:1 ratio (about 2.5 turns lock to lock) in either. To get the heaviest effort, you must request a third gen WITH FE2 suspension like Jim stated. A standard third gen uses a box with an effort not a whole lot more than a first gen.

I have had two 12.7:1 first gen boxes in mine before going to the IROC WITH FE2 box and there is a big difference in steering feel but the turns ratio is the same.
