69 BB Front Springs Help

My buddy has a 69 BB Camaro.

Too low in front so he had the springs changed. Was about 24" WW to ground when 1st and dropped almost 2" over night. 24" down to 22 1/4" 14" wheels BFG TAs

So I pull out the GM 1969 Spring Chart add it all up and comes to 411#s and order up HG Springs which are for over 426#s

Put them in and it drops over night to 22 1/4 again.

WTF

My 69 SBC Aluminum Head Car is 24 1/4' with the same wheel and tire and I have Hotchkiss 2" drop Springs.

Ideas? And yes the rubber is in the lower A-Arm. New Springs came from Classic

This issue is easily solved with AFCO adjustable spring spacers and the spring of your choice:

Re: 69 BB Front Springs Help

I have a BB 68 convert and I went through multiple spring changes until I got the perfect height with the Hotchkis BB springs. They don't look lowered very much from stock, just the right height.

http://www.hotchkis.net/6769_fbody_6...big_block.html

Just call Hotchkis and they will tell you almost the exact height the car will sit fender to ground once you tell them the specifics.

Re: 69 BB Front Springs Help

John – Tire and wheel size will also play big a role in ride height. That’s strange that it settled that much overnight. Those springs might be for a small block Camaro. Does he have stock lower control arms? Our lower arms have a ½” drop built in.

All stock suspension with Moog 638 Springs. Rally 15" wheels and 225/60/R15s

Center of hub to wheel Well is now just over 10" which is almost 4" lower then stock ride height.

Car was too low so he bought the Napa cross referenced 277-1154 which is the same as the Moog 638. The car was at about 12 1/2" at first and dropped 2" in 2 days. Then tried Classic Industries C278 which did the same thing but dropped even further.

Baffling to say the least.

I asked him last night to call you this am.

Thanks

Re: 69 BB Front Springs Help

John, I wish there was more information on this subject as well. I started a thread sometime ago with minimal response. Most of the information pertains to small blocks. Anyway, I have 25 1/2 inches (floor to wheelwell). Unfortunately I can't tell what springs are in there. I do have new "correct" leasfs installed in the back. I will try to read any numbers on the coils. Up to this point, its been a no go, I haven't been able to identify the coils.

Re: 69 BB Front Springs Help

What options are on the car ? It will be easier to compare what we have knowing that to help . Measure to the center of the wheel to the fender opening . That eliminates differences in tire diameter . Mine is 13.5 , AC 396 and RS

Thanks,

Car is 396 BB. TH400 Power steering and brakes and Vintage Air.

When I do the 1969 GM Spring Chart it comes to 411 lbs. This is probably a little heavy as the VA weighs less then factory air

Installed the Napa equivelent to Moog 638 spring. Then tried Classic Industries C278.

Car is now sitting 10 1/2" center cap to wheel well.

We are going to look later and see if maybe dropped spindles were installed as part of a disc brake conversion. I doubt it be this is the 3rd set of spring we've tried with no success in raising the car

What springs are you running?

Re: 69 BB Front Springs Help

My car is 396 AC ,power steering , front disc ,RS ,fold down rear seat . My springs are for a 1969 Fire bird 400 Ac convertible I bought them locally after trying several Camaro springs that were supposed to work but sat to low . I don't have the number from buying them but this is what i found from Moog .http://www.moog-suspension-parts.com...prod=MOOG-5244http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MOG-5244/

Re: 69 BB Front Springs Help

Inside Diameter Bar Diameter Install Height Load Spring Rate Free Height

Moog 5244 3.630 0.640 11.00 2124 315 17.75

Moog 638 3.630 0.625 11.13 1726 328 16.44

The 5244 has heavier load but less spring rate and is 1 /14" longer free height then the 638....Install height is close to the same

so...Which will raise the car higher?

btw we already tried the 638s and the car was at 10 1/2" center cap to wheel wheel
