Gen 2 Tilt Column Lower Bearing?

In the final stages of a tilt column swap/refresh for my '69. During the reassembly process and checking the disposable parts such as bearings I've noticed that the Gen 2 lower bearing is not a ball bearing assembly. It's made of a white plastic like material with two seals, is this correct or am I missing the lower ball bearing assembly?

If the plastic assembly is correct to the Gen 2 column would it be an upgrade to install the '69 bearing assembly on the lower shaft, or could it compromise the integrity of the collapsible column?

If the plastic lower assembly remains in place should this piece be lubricated, and if so what is the recommended lube for this piece?

Re: Gen 2 Tilt Column Lower Bearing?

There should be a ball bearing assembly pressed into a plastic adapter. The standard (non-adjustable) column and the tilt columns have the same lower bearing and adapter. Hope this scan is clear enough.

X2,you can't see the bearings but they are between two pieces of plastic that are pressed together along with a metal race.

Re: Gen 2 Tilt Column Lower Bearing?

A high quality chassis grease would be an acceptable lubricant for the bearing and the friction points with the plastic adapter.

The lower bearing shown on this drawing is 7805700. This bearing was used on virtually all 1969 through much later years (standard-non-adjustable, tilt, and T&T) GM steering columns. It was not used before 1969.

Even though the picture (above) shows a detachable flange (7807048) and pinch bolt (7807271) along with the 7805700 bearing, there were many different types of steering shafts (depending upon the GM model i.e. seperate intermediate steering shafts, stamped permanently attached flanges, demountable flanges, etc). They all used the same bearing and adapter package in the lower end of the steering column.
