Question

Ok, got the steering column and power steering box out of the car right now and thought I'd try to fix the leaks. While taking it out, I thought about whether or not I should replace the rag joint? It appears to be in pretty good shape, but is original, so how do I tell if I need a new one? If I do replace it, how do I get it off, looks like it is permanently attached?! Or does it come with a new collar?

You can buy the coupler assembly from the chevy dealer or from camaro restoration sources. It cost around 70.00 for GM coupler. I think they make a reproduction, but from what I have read they are not recommened for safety reasons. I would say go ahead and repalce it now while you have everything tore down. If it is original, it has alot of wear. Better safe than sorry!

I agree with yogi. Replace it. I bought one for the wife's 69 when I restored it. GM does want an arm and a leg for it but safety is never too expensive. Good luck with the car. Jim

I just ordered one from D+R for $30???!!! Should I be worried about this. Here's a pic and link to the coupler at D+R.

The only ones I have heard about being a safety issue are the type that come in a rebuild kit, you have to put them together.

Thanks for the responses guys, and thanks for the link Mark, That's what I what! I'll check with GM on Monday, but if they want $70 for new, I'll stick with D&R or Classic for the $30 one. All I can find in the parts houses are the rag part and you have to re-use the coupler. Don't like that idea...

The D&R part is only half of the joint if you have a tilt steering column car. The other half bolts onto the bottom of the column's shaft itself. pdq67

National Parts Depot has the complete joint for about $40.00 if I remember corectly.

I can't afford to drive a luxury car that has things like tilt steering!

That picture is just like what I took off, no other pieces required... Now if I can just get that stupid ignition switch out!

Ok, I gave up on the ignition switch, so I'll just have a key made for it!

Actually, if I want to feel special, I take the Chevelle out for a spin as someone swapped in a later model column that does have tilt capabilities. Then I also get to feel the big block and take out my frustrations on the tires!

Still don't have any AC tho!

I rec'd my ragjoint from D&R a few day's ago. Seems to be of decent quality (alot better than what I took off!). The only thing I suggest is I will probably replace the two bolts that bolt to the column with grade 8's and nyloc's just for safety and maybe the pinch nut with a grade 8 too. I doubt they would even want to sell them if they weren't safe.

Got the new joint today, looks like a real nice piece except... for the bolts! Not sure what they were thinking, but with the nuts on the bolts that came with it, there is less than 1/8" of the bolt sticking out the nut. To me, this would definitely not leave enough bolt once you get the column flange in there also. Definitely going to replace the bolts, but otherwise, I recommend this piece.

Ordered my part today from D&R today. When replacing this part, do the steering column and the steering box have to go back togther exactly the same way? In other words, if I moved the steering wheel in the car while disconnected to the box will things still work correctly. Thanks
