When I swapped manual box, standard column, short pitman arm last year to used fast ratio power steering box, tilt column, long idler arm, I had the car aligned to as close to the Gulstrand non-modified touring specs as possible (1 degree neg camber, 3 deg pos castor, 1/8" toe-in). The box never pushed all the way back to center. A friend drove it and brought my attention to it. He said the box was either too tight or shot. We loosened the box, but no change. Could it be too much castor, instead of the box being shot? Is there a way to check without realigning it or swapping to a new box? (Box was from an 87 Monte Carlo SS).

Thanks, Steve

I've noticed on my 67 that there is less to almost no steering self-return when a lot of caster is used. With power steering, there is less return compared to a manual setup. My guess is, there is a lot of fluid on each side of the piston inside the box and it takes a lot more force to move it.
You can raise the wheels off the ground and compare the effort to turn the tire, then compare to other cars. I wouldn't expect others to be much better.

Our 2002 Camaro SS has very little return.
