Hey, I read a posting that Z/28s came with a manual quick-ratio steering box, just wondering how many turns lock-to-lock??? And they are available anywhere? at what cost?

Thanks

I think they were around 3 turns lock to lock.
About the same ratio as fast PS for 67/68.

Standard-equipment Z/28 fast ratio manual steering was acomplished through pitman arm/steering arm changes. The steering gear is the standard maunual box used on thousands of Camaros/Novas.

For the '69 Z/28 there was a faster manual gear available under RPO N44. I had one and it is truly miserable for everyday driving.

I heard that the manual fast-ratio steering had the fastest ratio of all 67-69 boxes. I have a 67 Camaro SS manual steering(6 turns lock to lock) that I put the N44 pitman arm and steering shafts on and it made little difference.

I have a 67 SS350 that has a manual box with three turns lock to lock. I've owned the car since the early 70's and it has whatever box came on it from GM - probably the N44 fast ratio. The books say it is a 20 to 1 box and the steering linkage has the long pitman and short outer PS type arms.
The linkage increases the overall ratio to around 17 to 1.
You can get your manual box re done by the PS rebuilders to the faster ratio. Or search for the fast N44 box.

FYI: the part numbers are as follows:

67-68 Box #5699471
69 Box #7806396

Hey David, these are Z/28 Part Numbers, whats the part number on your steering box?

I'll take a look, but with the power steering boxes, the number cast into the box is just a casting number not an indication of the box application or ratio.

I spoke to some PowerSteering experts and they told me not to waste my time with a quick-ratio manual box, because they are extremely tight and difficult to steer......

Thanks for the help

I ordered mine w/ the optional fast non-power box and it is 3.5 turns lock to lock. I checked it for David. pdq67
