Hey,I have a 68 with a 10 bolt 8.2,and I've got a housing from a 73 Nova that uses the 8.5.What I was wandering is does the S/10-S/15 Blazer and Jimmy and the pick-ups use the same 8.5 rear end that will fit the 73 housing,or is it the smaller 7.5.If it is the 8.5 will the posi unit and gears work and the axles from my 68 8.2 housing work in it.I have read articles on the on the housings and they say that the axles out of the 68 housing fit the 73 housing.Any help would be nice,,,,Thanks

i believe the only S trucks to use the 8.5 are the ones with the best 4.3 litre engine and auto tranny. find a ZR2, and that will have one for sure. not sure if the stuff is compatible with the older nova 8.5, however. i do know that even if it does fit, the new posi units are pretty weak. GM has to warranty them a lot.
the axles out of your 8.2 housing will slide right into a 73 nova housing, as long as you still have a 28 spline differential in it.
the best place to look for decent gears and maybe a posi are in 73-87 half ton trucks, and pretty much any midsize or fullsize GM car from the 70's. also look in 71-81 camaros and firebirds.

Camaro BOB,
derrick is correct in that the axles are the same in both, so you can swap them right over. I have also heard that the truck posi are a different design and are weaker, but I don't know for sure.

One thing is that the 73 Nova housing will bolt right in, but it is a multi-leaf rear (most of them) so you should get the springs also or get new ones.

If you need, I have a used 8.5" posi and 3:23 gear out of a 79 TA for sale, email me if interested.

Good luck,
Bill C.

Bob I've been through this. Get a posi out of a 2nd Gen and then get some gears, new if you like, they're cheep. I'd take Bill up on his offer if the price is right.
