steering wheel turns for stock left to right

I think that I have a stock type steering box on my '69 camaro SS. It is loose and sloppy and my intention is to put a new box in from ride tech or Detroit speed

I lifted my car up and found that CURRENTLY when i start all the way left it takes just a hair over 2 full turns to get to the full right position. This is surprising! I though stock was 3.5 turns with about a 17:1 ratio. Is 3.5 turns for stock incorrect? would I expect about 2.5 turns or less with a new steering box (quick ratio)

I though I had all the research done but after lifting my car I am now confused. Any comments on my findings?

Sounds like you have a variable ratio power steering box. Check the info on David's site.

Sounds like the optional fast ratio N44 steering. If so, you have the short outer steering arms with variable ratio box. The problem with it is the box does not have the firm feel valving and it's slow on-center, fast as you turn it more, so the steering ratio is not linear.
I recommend going to a DSE 12.7 ratio non-variable and use a short pitman arm on it. Your lock to lock will be close to where it is now, but linear and higher effort. If you use the long pitman arm, the steering will be too fast and it will over react.

Check my web page for First Gen Camaro suspension info:

Re: steering wheel turns for stock left to right

I currently have the MOOG K6582 Greaseable Socket Reduces Corrosion/Wear; 5.78" From Stud Center To Spline Center that I installed a couple years ago

I also have installed the tru turn ride tech system, but I don't think it messes with the ratio but rather adjusts the wheel angles

Since my current setup is so sloppy I will probably replace the box with one of the above (detroit or ride tech) boxes and will need a new rag joint and then hope that the feel is far better. I know that there are iroc boxes from the junkyard and other aftermarket cheaper versions but I want a good setup as I do drive this car a bunch.
