Sounds like the optional fast ratio N44 steering. If so, you have the short outer steering arms with variable ratio box. The problem with it is the box does not have the firm feel valving and it's slow on-center, fast as you turn it more, so the steering ratio is not linear.
I recommend going to a DSE 12.7 ratio non-variable and use a short pitman arm on it. Your lock to lock will be close to where it is now, but linear and higher effort. If you use the long pitman arm, the steering will be too fast and it will over react.
