69 steering box interference with headers

My 69 has a 454 w/ headers which are 2" primaries and there is no clearance between the factory power steering box and the headers. I have dimpled the headers and shimmed the motor mount to raise that side of the block but still not enough room. What is the best/most economical way to fix this?
Thanks Team Camaro, Ken.

Re: 69 steering box interference with headers

We will need a little more information in order to help you out. What brand headers? Model #?, Is this a big block conversion or a factory big block car? Do you have the correct big block frames stands and transmission cross member? Automatic or manual transmission?

Re: 69 steering box interference with headers

The headers are Hooker Competition. I don't have the part #. This is a BBC conversion. The car originally had a 327. I have the offset BBC frame mounts and transmission mount installed. Turbo 400 w/ the correct transmission cross member.

Re: 69 steering box interference with headers

What type of cylinder heads do you have? If they are aftermarket, do they have stock or raised exhaust ports?

A 600 steering box will buy you a little room. Not cheap though.

Ken... All the right questions are being asked. I was in the same boat, X44 car now with a BBC 454, Super T10 4-speed, Iron 781 Oval port heads. All the mounts are correct, my Hooker Competition headers were bought new but dimpled (frustrated mock-up) and I also added a '96 JGC steering box to the mix. All Saginaws that are similar to the IROC '84 box are supposedly 1/8" wider, but I never actually mic'd them up. I used Moroso 3/16" shims and it helped, but in hindsight, I could've used the whole 3-piece set and picked up another 1/8" probably. Pretty sure you have to raise _both_ sides to get the full benefit.

Take a look at a set of Hooker Super Comps... pretty expensive but the problem tube goes up and over so it never gets near the steering box. Just very expensive, and if money's no object, go with Lemons.

They are stock cast iron heads.

Re: 69 steering box interference with headers

Any thoughts on the Vega power steering box from CPP?

Re: 69 steering box interference with headers

Contact Headman Headers. The Hustler series work well.
Even though I have a small block with the big tubes.
I have a Camaro with a 383 & the 600 box, the Hustler
headers have plenty of clearance for the P/S & spark plugs.
