Popping in steering column?

Hi folks - my 67 manual steering started having a "popping" or "snapping" sound when rocking the steering wheel left/right about 30 degrees while sitting still. There is no odd feel to the steering - you will just begin to make a turn then hear a snappy sound in the upper column and can feel the "twang" or "tap" in the steering wheel itself.

Entire column is original and upper bearing has some play. Steering gear is new, rag joint is old (original).

I am going to yank it and disassemble, just wondering if someone can shortcut my adventure.......
